- Dozens of protests took place in front of State Capitol buildings across the USA on February 28 2012 by the South Africa Project. Two of these small peaceful protest-groups were violently attacked by left-radical ‘Occupation’ groups. Thirty-five protestors of the South Africa Project in Sacramento, California were accosted by bottle-throwing ‘Occupy Oakland’ demonstrators whose aggression also injured two California Highway Patrol officers. And one South Africa Project protestor was sprayed with mace (teargas) by a left-wing protestor in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. The other dozens of protests were peaceful and conducted without any confrontations.

We are quoting Associated Press journalist Don Thompson, who reported from Sacramento that at least two law-enforcement officers from the California Highway Patrol were injured and required hospital treatment while they were accompanying about 35 members of the "South Africa Project' to a parking garage -- after the small group had protested peacefully outside the Capitol building in Sacramento, California.

Occupy Oakland group ‘began throwing cans and bottles at the South Africa Project group:

It was confirmed by protestors participating in the South Africa Project campaign, that they were attacked by about 50 members of the anti-capitalist Occupy Oakland group: who, according to AP journalist Thompson, 'began throwing cans and bottles at the South Africa group and at the officers.” The anti-caitalist Occupy members then clashed with the officers as people with the pro-whites group hurried into the parking garage. He urged people to FAX or write their elected representatives and urge them to protest against the murders in South Africa. FAXES or posted letters are more effective than e-mails, he advised. “So, spend the 47 cents.”

“These are hate-crimes. with cruel and prolonged tortures inflicted on men, women and children,” said Paul Fromm of Pennsylvania:

Also addressing the rally was Paul Fromm, a Director of the Council of Conservative Citizens, which endorsed this rally. A few of the attacks on farmers may be motivated by robbery, he said. “However, the cruel and prolonged tortures inflicted on men, women and children are motivated by hate – racial hate,” he argued. “These are hate crimes.”
The West has told Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad to stop killing his own people. “The stated reason Canada and the U.S went to war against Col. Gaddafi last year was to stop him from killing his own people,” Mr. Fromm explained. “The West must insist that the South African government crack down on the murder of Whites, especially White farmers, often by its own supporters,” Mr., Fromm insisted.
Mr. Fromm -- who visited South Africa in 1987 -- pointed out that South Africa was one of the few African nations that can feed itself. “This abundance is due largely to the work and efficiency of the “Boers” – South Africa’s farmers. The Dutch-speaking Afrikaners,”—he added -- have been demonised and misunderstood in the West.

“They have been in South Africa since the 17th century. South Africa was uninhabited, except for a small number of KhoiSan as the Boers moved north from the Cape in the 18th century. At about the same time, the various Nguni-tribes were moving south. The Boers or “Afrikaners” are every bit as much South Africans as the Blacks, Mr. Fromm explained,“It’s time to stand behind our European brothers in South Africa,” he concluded.

Ondersoek onderdrukking Afrikaans onder ANC-regime:

Bosma het SA besoek om ondersoek in te stel na die onderdrukking van Afrikaans in die onderwys onder die huidige ANC-regering. Hy onderneem die reis in sy kapasiteit as die Interparlementêre fraksie se voorsitter van die Nederlandse taalunie .

En die onderdrukking van die Taal is inderdaad orals sigbaar: veral in die onderwys: honderde Afrikaanstalige skole is al gedwing om hul Afrikaner onderwysers af te dank en nie-Afrikaanstalige kinders toe te laat – wat binne ‘n jaar veroorsaak dat Afrikaans as onderwystaal in daardie skole verdwyn het. Feb 24 2012 -- TheTimes writes: 'The Gelofte Volk leader Andre Visagie said he presented the charges on behalf of the Boer nation.
- The first charge was for Zuma's singing the forbidden song "dubul' ibhunu" (shoot the boer) at the African National Congress's centenary celebrations in Bloemfontein on January 11. Stage Six of Genocide is "Preparation: victims are identified and seperated out because of their ethnic- or religious identity"

PREPARATION: Victims are identified and separated out because of their ethnic or religious identity. Death lists are drawn up. Members of victim groups are forced to wear identifying symbols. Their property is expropriated. They are often segregated into ghettoes, deported into concentration camps, or confined to a famine-struck region and starved.
At this stage, a Genocide Emergency must be declared. If the political will of the great powers, regional alliances, or the U.N. Security Council can be mobilized, armed international intervention should be prepared, or heavy assistance provided to the victim group to prepare for its self-defense. Otherwise, at least humanitarian assistance should be organized by the U.N. and private relief groups for the inevitable tide of refugees to come.
7. EXTERMINATION begins, and quickly becomes the mass killing legally called “genocide.” It is “extermination” to the killers because they do not believe their victims to be fully human. When it is sponsored by the state, the armed forces often work with militias to do the killing. Sometimes the genocide results in revenge killings by groups against each other, creating the downward whirlpool-like cycle of bilateral genocide (as in Burundi). At this stage, only rapid and overwhelming armed intervention can stop genocide. Real safe areas or refugee escape corridors should be established with heavily armed international protection. If strong nations will not provide troops to intervene directly, they should provide the airlift, equipment, and financial means necessary for regional states to intervene.
8. DENIAL is the eighth stage that always follows a genocide. It is among the surest indicators of further genocidal massacres. The perpetrators of genocide dig up the mass graves, burn the bodies, try to cover up the evidence and intimidate the witnesses. They deny that they committed any crimes, and often blame what happened on the victims. They block investigations of the crimes, and continue to govern until driven from power by force, when they flee into exile. There they remain with impunity, like Pol Pot or Idi Amin, unless they are captured and a tribunal is established to try them. The response to denial is punishment by an international tribunal or national courts. There the evidence can be heard, and the perpetrators punished. Tribunals like the Yugoslav or Rwanda Tribunals, or an international tribunal to try the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, or an International Criminal Court may not deter the worst genocidal killers. Stage 7 of genocide is the all-out genocide which people usually associate with it: Mass-murders.

Stage 8 is the denial of the genocide -- which in South Africa already occurred much earlier, during stages 4 and 5 -- with the ANC-regime's denial of its genocidal attacks against Boer farmers and its constant official attempts to hide these facts by stopping its recording these 'farm-attacks' in seperate crime-categories on the official police statistics site http://www.saps.gov.za.

In January 2012 it was announced that ANCYL youth leader Julius Malema, while 'officially suspended' as president of the youth league: this suspension, it was later announced, would only take effect in June 2014. Effectively Mr Malema remains in power at ANCYL. Moreover, his political power continues in the ANC after 2014: late last year he was also elected as an executive-council member of the most influential group in the ANC-leadership, namely of the Limpopo branch.

GENOCIDE IS NOT ONE SINGLE EVENT - IT IS A LONG-DRAWN OUT PROCESS

Tens of thousands of South Africans have already emigrated from their country, and hundreds of Afrikaner asylum-seekers have applied for sanction in many different countries: fearing that they facing annihilation with their families: fears which are not unfounded, as seen on the daily incidents logged on the criminology-site http://www.farmitracker.com

Stanton of Genocide Watch warns however that genocide is not a singular event, it is a long-drawn out process.' A process which is increasing in intensity, as can be seen since January 6 2012, when Zuma sang Kill the Boer at an elite gathering of ANC-executives celebrating their 100th anniversary in Bloemfontein.

Thus far officially up to the end of 2011, at least 360 'South Africans' have obtained political asylum in a variety of Western countries, including the USA, Canada, and Ireland. More than 200 applications were by the end of 2011 also still pending. In New Zealand, each of the 40+ applications has been rejected: in Ireland asylum-seekers usually of Irish-descent, are more succesful. Others are pending in several European countries including Germany, and two Afrikaners in 2011 became the first people to be granted political asylum in Australia.
Officially, two charges of genocide have also lodged by Boer- and Afrikaner--organisations at the International Criminal Court in The Hague in April and May this year against the ruling ANC-leaders. And in January 2012, the Transvaal Agricultural Union VP also submitted a detailed report containing many forensic photographs, to a large gathering of European MPs in Brussels.
Up to August 20 2011, two at-risk minority groups were listed in South Africa by Genocide Watch – the 'Boer farmers' and 10-million black-African Refugees. The Boers have been listed at stage 5 since 2002. As the criminology-website http://www.farmitracker.com shows every day, the 'whites' now targetted aggressively: they are not only being publicly demonised and identified as the ‘enemy-group’ by the ruling ANC-govt officials, but many calls are also placed in the public media calling for their mass-murders, including the murders of white babies with the song 'One Bullet - One White Infant' and the ruling ANC's 'party-anthem', Kill the Boer. There is a constant stream of propaganda designed to incite 'the masses' against the 'whites', with inaccurate ANC-claims for instance that "80% of all the land is owned by whites'. The ANC-regime's own March 2011 land-registry statistics show that the SA State in fact already owns more than 65,000 of the 85,000+ formerly white-owned farms, and in addition also owns 41% of the total land-mass of South Africa which used to be independent homelands and 'native trust' lands.
ANC youths are actively engaged in planning and announcing plans to take over all the (estimated 12,000 white-owned private farms) with organised violence-driven youth groups; blacks-only youth groups are also being trained at military bases under the guise of 'rural census-takers'. These newly-trained (8,000-member) ANC youth league members officially were going to help carry out 'rural census' from early 2012. However the census now is over - and the youth groups still remain. The ANC-regime does not explain why it is necessary to provide military training and arms to these groups. It must be noted that Stage 8 of genocide is the denial of the genocide and attempts to hide it by the perpetrators and their followers.

It is estimated by Afrikaner religious- and community-charities such as Helping Hand of Solidarity trade union, that up to 800,000 of the 3-million Boers/Afrikaners have already become what can be termed internal refugees in their own country: people who are being pushed into the most marginal land-sites, where they have no survival-chances: and with the ANC actively barring all these mostly working-class Afrikaners and Boers by law from the labour market - even their disabled people are denied work -- even so, the International Red Cross and the UN Refugee agencies refuse to help these poor-whites in their survival-battle...

In Stage 6: the target group is forced into marginal land-sites:
Many of these stages blend into each other: for instance in Stage 6, the victims are also being 'forced into marginal land-sites or camps' where they would be left to starve. This has been happening with the whites in South Africa from Stage 5: when the ANC-regime made black-racist laws called 'black economic empowerment laws' which actively bar the vast majority of these Boers/Afrikaners from the entire labour market only because of their ethnicity: some 800,000 of the 3-million Boers languish on marginal land-sites: officially they are also being denied food-aid, -government benefits and denied access to the entire labour market. These laws are used to ethnically-cleanse 'whites' from their traditional towns and smallholdings because they rapidly become empoverished and homeless.

Health problems from China nuclear test program aired in Brussels

Millions of people were subjected to China's open-air nuclear testing in the Uyghur region, East Turkestan, China.

Yet nobody outside China knows the exact health impacts for this ethnic-minority, being forced to live under this permanent nuclear-cloud. On February 29 2012, the European Parliament is holding a conference in Brussels to highlight this human-rights issue.

The Lop Nor testing site, located in East Turkestan (also known as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region), was used for a total of 46 individual nuclear detonations over three decades (1964–1996).

These were the largest ongoing series of tests ever to be carried out in a populated area. Since the open-air testing ended in 1996, the health and environmental impact of radioactive contamination on the Uyghur-population is little-known to outsiders -- Lop Nor remains largely inaccessable to them... László Tőkés MEP, in cooperation with Kristiina Ojuland MEP and Vytautas Landsbergis MEP, will convene a conference, ‘50 Years After Test 596: China’s Nuclear Programme in East Turkestan and Its Impact Today’ at the European Parliament in Brussels on 29 February 2012 in collaboration with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), the World Uyghur Congress (WUC), and the Belgian Uyghur Association.

“With this conference, my colleagues and I wish to draw attention to the neglected topic of nuclear testing in East Turkestan, China, and make a call for a meaningful recognition of the civilian victims of the tests,” said László Tőkés MEP.
Multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominee and WUC President, Rebiya Kadeer, noted that “the Uyghurs have long suffered from the health and environmental effects nuclear testing in Lop Nor…it is time to address the devastating impact of radioactive exposure that have affected probably millions of people.”
While Beijing celebrates its nuclear capability, Marino Busdachin, UNPO General Secretary, warned that “a ‘Wall of Secrecy’ prevents experts from discovering the true effects of the Lop Nor tests and their real and devastating human cost in what amounts to a systematic violation of citizens rights”.
Among those contributing to the conference will be Enver Tohti (Uyghur and Independent Medical Researcher), Vincent Metten (International Campaign for Tibet), Dominique Lalanne (Nuclear Physicist and Chair of Abolition 2000 Europe), Robert Knoth and Antoinette de Jong (Authors of “Certificate no. 000358, Nuclear Devastation in Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belarus, the Urals and Siberia”). Under discussion will be possible compensation models and the scope for inclusion of the issue in future Human Rights Dialogues.

David Hall, unarmed Potchefstroom dairy farmer, 49, shot dead execution-style, wife Bernadette, 44 hit over head, survives Feb 20 2012 Potchefstroom, Buffelshoek, farm Frischgewaagd: BUFFELSHOEK- 49-year-old dairy farmer David Hall was murdered at about 06:00 Monday 2012-02-20, on his farm Frischgewaagd, Buffelshoek. close to Potchefstroom.

Above: The farmer and his 45-year old wife were milking cows in their dairy, which is situated 70m from their house, when they were overpowered by approximately 5 unknown armed black male suspects. (according to the wife's description, she gave in radio interview later today). They were both taken back to the farmhouse, the farmer was shot from behind in the head and he passed away on the scene, between the farmhouse and dairy. His wife was taken inside the house and tied up. She was assaulted by the suspects striking over her head with a blunt object. The suspects fled the scene in a Nissan Almera, belonging to the farmer with registration number: FMC 425 NW. The vehicle was found abandoned outside town. A family friend who happened by to visit the farmer and his wife managed to untie the wife and informed neighboring farmers of the incident. The Police were then informed of the attack. The 45-year old wife was taken to hospital for medical treatment. .A SAPS spokeswoman for North West Adele Myburgh was the first official to confirm that the farmer's wife also was injured. -- "OFM-Nuus" radio was reportedly told that a neighbouring farmer had rushed the injured Afrikaans wife to hospital. Ingrid Anna Niebuhr, 71, German-Afrikaner long-time charity worker, rual guest-house manager, Wakkerstroom: throat cut and scores of frantic stabbing wounds: probably killed Feb 9 2012

Feb 13 2012 - Naspers journalist Ügen Vos reports that a German-Afrikaner woman, Mrs Ingrid Anna Niebuhr, 71, who recently sold the Haus Bergfrieden guest-house, was found with her throat cut on Saturday February 13 2012 by neighbours, alerted by her gardener when he arrived at 8am. Mrs Niebuhr was last seen on Thursday Feb 9 at 2pm said SAPS Lt.col. Leonard Hlathi. The gardener rushed next door to get help when he saw the garage and kitchen-door were broken open. Wakkerstroom's ex-mayor Chris Smit said the neighbour found the murdered Mrs Niebuhr 'in a pool of blood'. She was stabbed fiercely: knifing wounds were visible in her neck, face and back. Nothing appears stolen: her VW Polo was used as a getaway car and found abandoned near Volksrust. journalist Marietie Louw-Carstens of Beeld newspaper reports that the Limpopo farmer, 38, was shot and then his wife Eunice and their two small children were tied up. He was a nutrition-expert at Alzu Fees in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. Mrs Du Toit and the children Francois (12) and daughter Stephanie (9 were dragged outside to a lapa at the homestead where they were left trussed up like pigs with their hands and feet together.

Mrs du Toit managed to cut her bonds after the murderers drove off in the family cars - which they abandoned on the farm shortly thereafter. She called the neighbours on their twoway radio. Mr Du Toit was still alive when the neighbouring farmers who rushed to their aid, tried to get him to a hospital but he died in their arms. His friends and neighbours said Mr Du Toit was a natural leader in his community and was well-known to the members of the Milk Producers Association.

February 21 2012 - 7h30 Erasmia -- Hoekplaas, a smallholding where household goods are recycled, was attacked early Tuesday-morning. The black male attackers bludgeoned the owner and workers with steel pipes but they survived the senseless violence.Citizen-volunteer security patrols reported that the two black male attackers arrived in a taxi and ten minutes later, the same taxi picked them up again, wrote Al Pal from Hennopsiriver. Al Pal from Hennopsrivier writes: Feb 21 2012: There was and armed Farm attack on the farm Hoekplaas. Policing area Erasmia at 7h30 this morning. The owners run a small recycling depot there. ... claimed two arrested youths at the Kroonstad magistrate's court: arrested for the vicious farm attack in Reitz - when the farmer's quadruplegic wife Margriet also was so brutally assaulted that she has since died; and his mother Bella, 85, (below) was raped. 2012-02-20 Marlene Jordaan of Volksblad daily writes from Kroonstad magistrate's court: KROONSTAD. – Two 17-year-old black male youths, charged with two counts of murder, one of rape, three counts of assault and of armed robbery - have denied guilt for the gruesome murder of Afrikaans farmer Thinus Uitenweerde, 55, of Reitz.
They also denied that they had fatally assaulted his quadruplegic wife Margriet, 57, and denied that they had raped his 85-year-old mother Bella Uitenweerde.
Mrs Margriet Uitenweerde has died of the traumatic injuries sustained in the assault.
The two black youths claim in their plea-explanation before judge Albert Kruger that five unknown, armed black males had shown up on the farm and ordered them to carry out their deeds.
Mr Uitenweerde was found buried in a shallow grave near the homestead: his hands and feet were tied together and his head was wrapped up with a scarf. He had a bludgeoning-injury to the back of his head and police found a blood-covered hammer in one of the out-buildings: the Uitenweerdes had been renovating this room for one of the young accused men to live in: he was doing odd jobs on the farm.
Mr Martin Uitenweerde junior, the murdered farm-couple's son, broke down in court when he was asked to identify his father's bundle of keys.
SAPS detective-capt Schweppes Moshuaduba testified that these keys were pointed out to him with some tools, meat and a bottle of small coins by one of the two suspects: they also pointed out two sports-bags belong to the murdered farmer.
Two cellphones and a wallet belonging to the Uitenweerde couple also were found beneath a mattress of one of the two male youths.
The two youngsters were arrested in a nearby township within hours after the farm-attack was discovered 22 hours later.
And these 'youths' may not be identified, and must be tried as 'children' for these horrendous crimes.

PREVIOUS REPORT -- 2011-08-02 REITZ - Afrikaner farmer Thinus Uitenweerde, 55, was tied up, dumped in a shallow grave next to his homestead, and stoned to death on July 31 2011 at 1pm.
Volksblad journalists M J Lourens and Jana van der Merwe write in Volksblad daily that his body was discovered by police on the farm Alliesrust. His disabled wife Magriet and his 84-year-old mom Bella are in hospital: both women were brutally assaulted and then tied up. The assault took place on July 31 2011 at 1pm. The two frail women were only found 22 hours later.

The news media said it was an 'armed robbery' because two cellphones, an old hifi set and the murdered farmer's wallet were found in the possession of two black 'youths' who were arrested several hours later in the local Petsana township. The police launched their search for the farmer after Mr Uitenweerde's son Martin, who lives in Bethlehem, tried to phone his dad and grandmom. The Bethlehem police tracker-dog unit was called in and rushed to the farm. When Martin Uitenweerde showed up, the police as already on the scene. He heard his mom call for help from inside the house.The police searchers found his body about 100m from the homestead near a ruin where the attackers had tried to hide the grave with leaves and sticks. The son burst into tears when police discovered the gruesome find: Mr Uitenweerde's skull was 'probably crushed by the large stones from the ruin. His feet were tied with a black shoe-lace, his hands with a nylonrope and they had put a scarf around his face.' 3000 mineworkers gather at Implats: chase off, terrorise 100 black-African shopkeepers:
Rustenburg, Impala Platinum Mine, Lonmin: - Nearly 100 foreign business owners have been displaced after their shops were looted and vandalised during a strike at the Impala mine in Phokeng, North West police said on Sunday.
"Approximately 32 shops were looted, belonging mostly to foreign nationals in close proximity to Freemanville, close to Impala mine," said police spokesperson Brigadier Thulani Ngubane."The owners are now staying with friends and relatives in Ziniaville, Rustenburg," he said. Ngubane said not all business owners who had been affected had opened cases.He said the situation at the Impala mine and Freedom Park was that all local businesses belonging to foreigners in Freedom Park were looted on Thursday and Friday, said Ngubane.

2012-02-19 Black students rioted last week at the Westville University campus in KwaZulu, assaulting students and lecturers, rampaging through campus and destroying property. In addition, one black student who called himself by two names – namely Siyanda Myende and Shle Shlobo - wrote on the campus’ facebook page this past Wednesday:

"Indians will never understand black people because there are too many racial differences.We are born to kill and tomorrow we will wipe out all the Indians on campus. Don't show up because you will go straight to heaven.'

"For whites we have already started with T.Blanch so we are continuing from there tomorrow this is our country we don't need whites and Indians at UKZN'.

KZN students reacted in anger at the blatant hate speech – and in response to the outrage the University says they will investigate this and a case has been alledly been opened against the student. The threats to kill Indians and Whites were amongst the many black-racist attacks and hatespeech targetting lecturers and students at the Westville University campus in last week’s rioting and ‘strikes’.

A second posting by the student, who wrote under the name Siyanda Myende and then changed the name to Shle Shlobo, also posted an apology saying: "I was wrong, I am sorry for that, human error. I will be quit until the sun set."

The inciteful words were condemned by other students, most of them Indians - who commented on the facebook page in response:

The row erupted after large black gangs describing themselves as ‘strikers’ destroyed Westville campus property and created a dangerously chaotic situation for lecturers and students when they erupted into anger, claiming to be over the lack of financial aid by the university and the lack of student housing. The SAPS had to use water-cannon, teargas and rubber bullets after students were assaulted and intimidated and a lecturer injured during an assault.

Three were released because of a lack of evidence and one that is being held in custody is not a UKZN registered student. On the evening of Tuesday 14 February, students stoned the RMS building and the front glass doors and windows of the main admin block. The Westville SRC president, Lucky Nkalanga, was arrested on an assault charge that was reported earlier in the week.
"During the past two days, we have been dealing with severe racist remarks posted on our face book wall. The University has concluded the investigation into this and is finalising the charges. The individual that started this verbal attack is not a UKZN student," said Mbadi. "We are also extremely disappointed at the level of racist comments by our students in response to the posting. We encourage all students to embrace the diversity of cultures in our rainbow nation and promote tolerance and mutual respect as articulated in the UKZN PACT. The University is committed to the principles enshrined in our Constitution, notably non-racialism and non-sexism. The University’s Transformation Charter serves as a reminder to all staff and students to contribute to a socially cohesive institutional culture," added Mbadi. Executive management said they “regret the inconvenience, and in some instances pain and suffering experienced by some staff and students that did not participate in the protest action.”

"At no point did we close our doors to the Wesville SRC. During the protest action, the president of the Westville SRC refused to attend a meeting with the executive director student services that led to the rest of the SRC refusing to engage. In an attempt to avert a protest we have held several meetings with all the SRCs to try and address their issues," said Madi.

The University is “engaging with government to seek additional funding for financially needy and academically sound students”. Accommodation has been made available for all sponsored students, provided that they provide an original copy of a letter from the sponsor or an affidavit from a parent or guardian. "Every attempt will be made to catch up on lost time," concluded Mbadi.

The university spokeswoman also claims they will 'investigate' the racist hatespeech-matter. "We will use our internal punishment system to investigate this', she said.

By March 2011, the SA State already owned 64,976 of the 85,000+ ‘white’ commercial farms and 5,448 agri-holdings registered as ‘white ówned” in 1994 – but the ANC-regime doesn’t know the exact extent of its own state-land holdings because its Land Registry Records do not include the 41% of the total SA land surface of 1,214,470 sq km which used to be the independent tribal homelands – where millions of black people still farm and have settlements today -- and all their tribal land now is also owned by the State although not lodged in any land-registries…

Below: In March 31 2011, a total 1,155,508 Land parcels were identified as State land – of which 1,085,084 were urban, 64,976 were state-owned farms and 5,448 were state-owned agricultural holdings. In addition 41% of the SA land-surface were former black homelands: now also owned by the State and occupied/farmed by millions of black people.

Land-parcels formerly belonging to autonomous tribal homelands, and of course still occupied and farmed in 2011 by the same tribal groups, occupy as much as 41% of the total SA land surface – yet are not registered in the current Land Deeds Registry Office and ‘cannot be reconciled’ as per below, per province: (so how can ‘whites own 80% of all the land?)

Above -- Up to 41 % of all the SA land (private and state) was however also identified as being in the formerly independent black homelands – and which parcels could not be reconciled with the SA Deeds Registration System because this land was under the hegemony of autonomic black-tribal entities and was not registered in the SA Deeds office before 1994. After 1994, the homelands ceased to exist. However -- Millions of black South Africans still maintain subsistence farms and settlements there in e.g. Gazankulu, Bophuthatswana, QwaQwa, Bantu trusts, Kwa-Zulu, Transkei, Venda etc.

Arable farm-land in South Africa occcupied some 12,1 percent of entire land-surface but in 2008, only 0,79 percent of the land was farmed for food cropping:
In 1994, the SA revenue registers showed that there were between 85,000 and 100,00 privately-owned, food-producing farms in South Africa, which employed more than 1,6-million workers – all taxpayers who lived on the farms with their families. These farms ever only produced this excess-food on less than SIX PERCENT of the entire surface of the country – although according to the CIA, 12,1 percent of SA is considered ‘arable’ land.

The effect on the SA agricultural sector of losing so much farm-land to the State:

By 2010, the Grain-SA Cooperative reported a membership of only 1,000 grain-producing farmers in the entire country. The rest of the members in the Transvaal Agricultural Union and Agri-SA produce many other food-crops and products from livestock – while many commercial farmers also generated extra income by turning to the lower-overhead wildlife-farming and game-lodge tourism and hunting industry.

South Africa is a very arid country with irregular supplies of running surface-water in many regions. Not mentioned in the article by Loane Sharp is the very relevant fact that from the end of 2011, the vast majority of ‘whites’ - including white disabled people – are banned from the SA labour market because of their race:
It’s important to note that two Broad-Based Black-Economic Empowerment Acts bar the vast majority of white males (from 2003) and white females and the white disabled (from 2011) from the South African labour market. Writes Meersman: “What they are referring to is the proposed Intelligence General Laws Amendment Bill . This is the latest assault by the executive through the legislature on the democratic freedom of all South Africans, rich and poor. Alarmist? Maybe. But one should make no apology for asking a few hard questions when dealing with proposals that affect our fundamental rights.
Surveillance of interception of internet communications without a warrant:
For now let's dub it the "Stasi Bill", because it brings into existence an organisation with the same name as the one that existed in East Germany, and it legalises broad powers of interception and surveillance of our telephone conversations, email, and internet communications without a warrant.
The Stasi Bill will bring the Secret Service, National Intelligence Agency, the Office of Interception Services among several others - under one Big Brother bureau. In 2009, this single department, the State Security Agency, was established by Presidential Proclamation (probably unlawfully).
As I wrote here a month ago, it is damaging that the debate around the Secrecy Bill has become couched in the public mind as a battle between the media and a majority government. It is much more than that. The Secrecy Bill and the Stasi Bill form part of the same revision process ordered by the president and pushed by the intelligence community.
The express purpose of the Secrecy Bill is to make for iron-clad classification of the activities of the State Security Agency. Together they will create a security state within the state.

These development need to be seen in context. Jacob Zuma was for years head of intelligence in the ANC. We must assume he knows what he wants out of this process. His closest confidantes have been spooks in one guise or another: Mac Maharaj, Moe Shaik et al.
Zuma has been the target of attempts to abuse the intelligence services for political gain (the infamous Browse Mole Report, the hoax emails, the Zuma spy tapes, Billy Masethle's firing etcetera).
Subsequently, Zuma himself has been accused (by Athol Trollip of the DA) of using the intelligence services for political surveillance.

The man running the Stasi-Operation in SA will be in charge of the entire security establishment…

“Conflicts within the intelligence services arising from different political agendas are therefore an irrefutable reality. Amalgamation will not solve that problem; all it means is there is to be just one agenda, and the man in charge will set that agenda.
After the horror show of apartheid our state intelligence community was "reformed". But recidivism among spooks is high. Do our intelligence operatives finally embrace the spirit of the Constitution? Has our President for that matter - with his very different intelligence roots - embraced it?
Both the apartheid securocrats and the intelligence agents of the liberation movement operated in a highly secretive ethos -- very different from the democratic intelligence service we now wish to establish.

Senior politicians have this nasty habit of seeing ‘bloody agents’ and ‘foreign spies’ among civil society:

The ruling party would do well to humbly remind itself of its many intelligence failures historically, and its overzealous internal security department that still has things to answer for.
What will stop operatives interpreting their mandate as they see fit? When accountability is so low in almost every government department, how can we be assured state security will be an exception?
Times have definitely changed. Our Ministry of State Security no longer exists to strike fear into the hearts of the public. It even has a Facebook page (‘Liked' by only 50 people) and a Twitter account (you can follow their rather wry interactions with Maynier).

Where and what is the threat to state security - exactly?

This is to be encouraged. A new democratic culture of intelligence has still to take root. But the Stasi and Secrecy Bills could strangle that process.That our intelligence service has in the past decade leaked like a sieve and is not widely considered to be very effective is a real concern if we accept that our national security is under threat.
But what is the threat? Is it Tibetan separatists? Industrial spy rings? Crime syndicates? The Landless People's Movement? Political dissent? Or is it - to use that dreadfully vague, ideologically loaded word from our past and the USA's present (which in my view we should not have imported into our legislation) - "terrorists"?

You would know if NIP, the list of National Intelligence Priorities approved annually by Cabinet, wasn't classified.

A member of the parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence (JSCI) murmured darkly to me that there are malevolent forces at work in the Republic. Listening to him you would have thought the JSCI were the ‘Men in Black' allowing us lowly citizens to happily get on with our lives oblivious to the flying saucers invading from outer space. If such threats exist, what evidence is there? Are these clear and present dangers or just the amorphous imaginings of securocrats?
The government must take us into its confidence. It should keep us informed. Even the CIA manages that without jeopardising their operations.
Are these two Bills intended to bring our intelligence agencies to proper order, or is it about bringing them to political heel? What does "protecting the state" mean when politicians and state bureaucrats do and can use state power to serve their interests against their opposition or rival factions? Do these bills promote a new intelligence culture or are we backsliding?

Constitutional Law Professor Pierre de Vos points to the fact that the Bills ignore some of the Johannesburg Principles on National Security, Freedom of Expression and Access to Information, and do not take sufficient cognisance of the recommendations of the "Matthews Commission" formed under former intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils.

The latter found that our intelligence services often do not obey the law, and that they repeatedly breach the constraints and guidance of the Constitution.

Then there is the security budget. It too is classified and that is no small matter. It was precisely this kind of classified funding that allowed the most egregious (and illegal even under apartheid law) violations to happen. Both the Treasury and the Auditor-General find it hard to see how classification is justified. The only ostensible oversight is from the JSCI's perusal. And those minutes too are classified.

In a living democracy each and every secret should be robustly justified. Are we instead setting off down the same road of current international bad practice that we witness happening in Western democracies around the world? Why should we think South African securocrats would behave any less badly given such laws?

That our state security is on a roll was in evidence this week at the arrangements around the State of the Nation address in parliament. Even pedestrians were banned. We the people were not invited to the opening of our parliament.
Prince Buthelezi, in one of his clearer moments, complained that the "extreme", "unnecessarily tight security measures" was proof enough that "the securocrats have taken over". There were even snipers on the roofs. Such is the nature of any security bureaucracy once set in motion; it develops a life of its own, ever more perfected, increasingly impregnable and secret.
As its methods are refined and its abilities become more exhaustive, it transforms into something quite different from what was initially envisaged.
As perceived or actual enemies are uncovered, it expands its definition of what constitutes a threat. Success breeds suspicion. In the end, comes a mindless tyranny over which even its creators lose control - Vlakplaas, Guatanamo Bay, the Stasi.
Far-fetched? We have already deported at least one individual to extraordinary rendition. Do our agencies see international co-operation as more important than protecting our constitutional rights?
Paranoid? Of course, but I'd be less paranoid if I knew this legislation was more tightly drafted in line with the Johannesburg Principles and the 2008 Ministerial Review Commission on Intelligence (for openers); if I knew it was free of executive agendas.
We must hope our Constitutional Court will help us find the balance between democracy and secrecy. But there is enough here to unsettle one, not least the slippage between law and practice.
